An Apple Fix
January 6, 2009
I wanted to kick myself on the noggin the other day. I’m sure you would want to do the same thing when you accidentally dropped your iPhone! Yep, I dropped mine while putting groceries in the car. The thing bounced several times and landed in a puddle of water, in the pouring rain! Alas, the impact left a visible gap on the upper left corner, a gap big enough that some of the interior components became visible. It pretty much rendered the ringer/vibrate button useless. All the other functions remain working though, which was a bit surprising considering how the thing fell.
So after I stopped slapping myself over and over again, I called the Apple store. It was too late to come in that night so I had to wait until the next morning. I explained the issues to one of the attendants and he told me that they couldn’t fix this kind of problem at the store and suggested that I make an appointment to meet with one of the geniuses to further discuss my options. Their schedule was pretty much all booked up for the day. So I went online on one of the iMacs and make an appointment at a different Apple store.
I arrived at the second store on time and got called soon after. The genius whom I was dealing with was pretty cool and helpful. He examined the phone after I explained again what had happened. He said that in order to fix the phone, it will need to be pried open and disassembled. And that they can not conduct this procedure at the store. Yeah, tell me something I don’t know. I was just about to cry like a baby when he told me that another option would be to replace the phone with a new one!……….My jaw dropped! Seriously? You’re pulling my leg, right? Nope! And since I’ve been syncing the old phone to my iMac’s iTunes, he was 100% sure that I should be able to restore all my contacts, apps and programs from the previous phone, just by connecting the new phone to my iTunes at home. I was so happy I almost kissed the guy!

So there it was, within 15 minutes, I left the store with a brand new iPhone. I didn’t forget to purchase the silicone jacket plus it’s anti-glare/scratch film this time. An extra protection goes a long way. All and all, I left a very happy and satisfied customer. Cheers to Apple.

whoa! what a service!!
Sony Ericsson made me sign a warranty waiver after i told them that my phone is sick because i dropped it accidentally in a (public) toilet. then after that, they said, there is nothing they can do except drying it out and hope that it will turn on by itself.
i wish they would give me a new one…

That’s a bummer. Honestly, I didn’t not expect it either. I went to the store with very low expectation and have prepared my self for the worst. And a tech from the first store told me that they usually look at this issue in a case by case basis. So it may have been a combination of good luck, the super helpful tech at the second store and my ‘I’m-going-to-bawl-like-a-little-girl’ facial expression :).
